15 Vastu Key Rules for Design of a House

While i am personally not strict about Vastu, but a lot of my clients are and over the past few projects, i have jotted down below 15 key rules of Vatsu which must be followed to make a house on a plot fully Vastu compliant. It’s a simple but powerful list to get you started and I hope that below list will save you lots of time to collate this information.

Vastu
  1. Plot: The plot should ideally be square or rectangular in shape. Avoid irregularly shaped plots or those with missing corners.
  2. Orientation: The main entrance of the house should face east, north, or northeast to invite positive energy. South-facing entrances are generally not preferred.
  3. Main Door: The main door should be the largest and most well-decorated entrance. It should open in a clockwise direction and have a threshold to prevent energy leakage. Main door of house should face north , east or north east. Doors into any space from southwest is not permitted. Further doors from north of north west or east south east are not preferred.
  4. Rooms and Placement: The master bedroom should be in the southwest direction, while children’s bedrooms can be in the northwest or west. The kitchen should ideally be in the southeast, and the living room in the northeast or north. Bed is preferred in south west part with headboard placements are preferred along south or west walls which ensures Head is towards south or east while sleeping.
  5. Staircase Placement: Staircases should be in the south, southwest, or west portion of the house and should ascend clockwise to maintain positive energy flow. Some experts advise against south location so west is preferred location.
  6. Pooja Room: A dedicated space for prayer or meditation, known as the pooja room, should be in the northeast corner of the house. It should be clean, peaceful, and well-lit.
  7. Home Office : Best located in the north or northeast part of house. Entrance door preferred from north or east and desk should be such that person faces east or west. South facing person on a desk is not permitted.
  8. Bathroom and Toilet: Bathrooms and toilets should be placed in the northwest or southeast corners of the house or space under consideration. Avoid locating them in the northeast or southwest corners. WC should be on northern or southern wall of toilet. Basin can be on any wall except eastern wall of the toilet.
  9. Colors: Choose colors according to Vastu principles. Use soothing colors like white, light blue, or pastel shades for the walls. Avoid using dark or bold colors excessively.
  10. Ventilation and Lighting: Ensure proper ventilation and natural lighting in all rooms. Ample windows and open spaces facilitate the flow of positive energy.
  11. Water Features: Water features like fountains or aquariums are considered auspicious. They can be placed in the northeast or north direction, bringing positive energy into the house.
  12. Garden and Plants: Maintain a well-kept garden with vibrant and healthy plants. Avoid thorny plants and cacti inside the house, as they are believed to bring negative energy.
  13. Geopathic Stress: Check for any geopathic stress zones caused by underground water streams, fault lines, or electrical equipment. Avoid constructing rooms over such zones.
  14. Gensets: While traditional homes in olden times didn’t have gensets , I have found that as per Vastu they are best located in northwest or south east of a plot. For obvious reasons of noise and vibration best kept far from bedroom spaces.
  15. Basements: This often not liked by Architects who want to make use of basement to free up the ground floor. Basements never existed in old traditional houses when Vastu rules were created due to lack of technology or need for such structures in houses. While they have today become popular, Vastu experts always advise not to have a basement in a house as first priority. If you must have it , it must be located in northeast part and access staircase must be from north, east or northeast for positive energy.
